Before and After Magic

January 16, 2017

One of my favorite things about photography is how you can photograph a moment and then bring it to life in a unique way by editing it post-process. My style as a photographer tends to be natural and bright with pops of color but my photos don’t always start out that way. Here is an example of a photo I took at a recent wedding. This “after” photo has been edited according to my style through a program I use called Lightroom.

This is the original  or “before” photo that has not been touched and is straight out of camera. I shoot RAW images instead of JPG which allows me to adjust exposure and white balance in detail. It is a bit darker than I usually shoot but when you are shooting a wedding, you don’t always have the opportunity to adjust your settings in your camera fast enough to keep up with the day so you just have to make do.

A great part about editing in Lightroom is that I know even if I am in a situation that has less than perfect lighting, I can fix it later. However, the best thing I can do to ensure I get a photo that I like is to use the ambient light I am given to highlight the subject in the best way possible so that the image is a great base to start with. If I can do that, then I know processing it later in Lightroom will be a quick adjustment resulting in a beautiful image that I can share with my clients!
