Tip Tuesday || 3 Tips to Consider When Planning For a Smooth Wedding Day

May 17, 2016

As a photographer but most importantly a past bride, here are 3 tips to consider when planning for a smooth wedding day.

Tip #1: If you are not working with a wedding planner, consider asking a relative/family friend to step in as one during the day to ensure everyone is where they need to be and when.

A lot of stress during a wedding day can come from worrying about the timeline and whether or not things are going as planned. So much is going on all at once which can be very stressful and distracting when all you should really be focusing on is getting ready and preparing to marry the man of your dreams.

My husband and I decided to ask a relative of mine to step in as the coordinator for our wedding day. She carried the timeline with her and guided people where they needed to be. We met with her a few days prior to the wedding and explained our expectations. Then when it came to our big day, that was just one less thing we had to worry about.

Tip #2: When creating your wedding day timeline, consider allowing enough time in your schedule to include a break before the ceremony.

If you are planning to do a first look you will likely be taking photos all morning/afternoon, so by the time you are done you will definitely be ready for a break. Plus, if your wedding is in the heat of the summer you may also be in need of food + water. Allowing for at least 45+ minutes before your ceremony will give you time to rest, recuperate, and even refresh hair and makeup. This will also give you plenty of time to hide before the majority of guests arrive.

This was another thing my husband and I planned for during our wedding. We were so thankful for a chance to sit down, drink some water, and catch our breath before the rest of the day’s festivities occurred. That was one of the only breaks we had throughout the entire day and boy was it needed!

Tip #3: Consider making your timeline into a word document (if you aren’t already) and giving everyone involved a copy.

As a photographer, I always work to help create a timeline with my brides to ensure the day has ample enough time for photos but I rarely see it with anyone the day of. This may be one reason people have a hard time sticking to it. After making your timeline into a word document, be sure to print and/or email a copy to everyone involved in the day’s festivities. Since guys tend to not be detail-oriented, it may even be wise to give them a modified timeline including only what is pertinent to them.

Sometimes things just happen, people are running late, someone gets lost but by emphasizing early and often that being on time is very important to you and your fiancé, the hope is that your friends and family will value your desires and make sure that they do all they can to stick to the schedule.
