The Magic Of Golden Hour And What Makes It So Special

February 22, 2020

You might be wondering why I recommend planning your session either within 2 hours of the sunrise or 2 hours before the sunset. This is not the only time you can have your photos taken but it certainly is a good time for the sake of lighting. This is when the sun is at its prettiest angle lending to golden light and beautiful warm skin tones. If possible, this will always be our goal time to have your session.

However, because we live in Indiana, you can’t always guarantee a sunny day for your session nor will it always be during that golden hour time due to work schedules, etc. so I am going to show you some different images of sessions that happen at different times of the day and with varying weather. The sun also behaves differently in the colder months so I will show you some samples of that as well. All of this to show you what you might expect from a regularly scheduled sunset session, of a session that is on an overcast or cloudy day, of a session that is in the winter months, and even a session during a rainy afternoon.

Golden hour: As I said before, this is the most ideal time to schedule your session. It can either be in the morning or in the evening. I love playing with the sunlight and it creates the most beautiful warm tones and pops of color!

Overcast: On an overcast day, typically the sun is behind clouds and so colors tend to be more muted and shadows more contrasting. As long as there isn’t rain in the forecast we will most likely still have your session on a day like this it just won’t have bright sun popping in and out.

Rain: If rain is expected or possible during your scheduled engagement session, we will try to reschedule for a better day. The sample images that I have are from weddings because you can’t reschedule those and have to power through the rain. Sometimes you get lucky and it is super bright and there is plenty of light you just have to find cover during the portrait time. Other times it can be very dark and overcast while raining incessantly providing a more moody look.

Late Fall/Winter: If your session happens to be in the late fall or winter season, the sun can act very differently. There is a chance that it could be super sunny or dull and overcast. And because those months tend to be less colorful in the environment it can make your photos look more muted in color regardless of the sun shining through or not.

No matter the weather or season, you can be assured that we will create beautiful imagery together. We may have to deal with the heat of an Indiana summer or the freezing temps of an Indiana winter. Either way, it will be fun and I can not wait to work with you!
