4 Ways to Overcome the Afternoon Slump

May 8, 2017

You know that mid-afternoon slump where the motivation of the morning has worn off and all the not-so-fun things on the to-do list are left? Well, it gets me. Almost EVERY DAY. And I usually just decide to scroll through Instagram, take a nap, pin pretty images on Pinterest and maybe even eat a bite of ice cream instead of actually doing productive things. I bet you can guess where all of that leads to?

Disappointment. Regret. Basically nowhere productive. Sound familiar?

Recently I have decided that instead of giving in to all of that, I am going to take a step away from my work to journal and pray to God about whatever is on my mind. Last week’s journaling led me to Matthew 6:21 – For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – My prayer was that my heart would be pointed towards God in times of boredom and procrastination rather than Instagram, Pinterest, or ice cream.

Journaling is just one way to overcome the afternoon slump. Here are a few other things that I do to get me through the afternoon so that I can be more productive. Maybe they will help you get through your hardest part of the day, too.

  1. Take a break to journal and pray about whatever is laying on your heart.
  2. Take a 5 minute walk around the neighborhood to collect your thoughts.
  3. Write down the 3 most important things you need to finish that day, make them a priority, and leave the rest for the following day.
  4. Do something like folding the laundry, washing the dishes, or cleaning the bathroom to give yourself a break and to refocus on what you still have left to do.
