Should You Hire A Wedding Planner? || Tip Tuesday

March 20, 2018

Meet Tara Steele of Tara Nicole Weddings. She has been a wedding planner since 2010 and has worked with some of the best vendors in the industry providing beautiful, elegant, organized weddings to her amazing clients over the past 8 years. You might be wondering why I just introduced you to someone other than myself for this blog post but I said to myself, if I was going to tackle this subject, I knew that I couldn’t do it alone. Who better than an amazing wedding planner and mom-boss based out of Indianapolis?

I stumbled onto Tara’s Instagram account almost two years ago and I knew instantly that I wanted to meet her. She is a fantastic wedding planner based in Indianapolis who runs her business professionally, exquisitely, and with a style akin to my own. I of course, admired her open faith and was excited to reach out for a meetup. As you know, life gets in the way and people have babies and such 😉 so our meeting was delayed until recently. It was worth the wait however, because it was so much fun!

In an effort to not only get to know Tara more and hear her story of how she became such a renowned wedding planner, I decided to also ask her a few questions regarding the benefits of having a wedding planner on your team. One of the biggest causes of stress on a wedding day is undoubtedly the chaos and overload of information and people to deal with on a single day. Bringing on a wedding planner can remove that added stress and is something that I’d really like to encourage my clients to pursue. As a wedding photographer, I have seen a pattern emerging with Midwest brides and that pattern is the DIY and “I can do it myself” attitude when it comes to planning a wedding. But let me tell you from someone who has been a part of over four seasons of weddings (and probably more importantly as a past bride), budgeting for a wedding planner could possibly be the best decision you make for your wedding and in the words of Tara herself, here is why…

  1. What is so beneficial about bringing on/hiring a wedding planner for your wedding? What does a wedding planner bring to the table (i.e. their services, something a bride might not know)?
  • Up first, and most obvious would be a wedding planner’s experience and industry knowledge.  It is their job as your service provider to be well-versed in all current wedding information, trends, and reports to serve your best interests.I like to think a wedding planner is to the wedding industry what a lawyer is to the legal field – both are considered experts in their respective fields and are called upon to proactively solve a problem or amend a current situation. You are allowed to represent yourself in court, but most would opt to hire legal counsel to ensure the best outcome because a lawyer is considered an expert on the subject at hand. The same holds true for a wedding planner – you are allowed to plan your own wedding if you wish; but those who hire a professional wedding planner/design team will get the best outcome because we are experts in our field.
  • Secondly, when you are planning your own wedding – you don’t know, what you don’t know. There is only so much research you can read online or in a book. Having the real-world experience is really where the value of having a wedding planner sets in. The amount of service your planner brings to the table is what will take your wedding to the next level – their years of experience ensures they know what they are doing and have your best interest at heart.
  • Another reason is that they will find you the best vendors for your event and you specifically.
  • Lastly, time is money – and let’s be honest…. We all want more time to do the things we love. Unless you really LOVE wedding planning, hiring a planner can also give you your sanity back so to speak.

  1. What are you missing out on when you don’t hire a wedding planner?
  • Peace of mind and enjoying your engagement. Quite honestly – wedding planning is stressful – and even more so when there are unique family dynamics involved. There usually is a lot of money being spent and that can test any relationship. Having a planner to organize everything and make all of the pieces very clear from the beginning allows everyone to rest easy at night.
  • (Lex) This is one of the biggest pushes I want to make as well coming from my own experience as a bride. I loved our wedding, don’t get me wrong, but one of the things I can distinctly remember from it all is how exhausted I was the night before from trying to do everything myself. I had loads of help from family but even so, I wish we could have handed all of those little details and finishes off to someone else so instead we could have spent our time together enjoying our rented house and pond instead of bustling around putting things together last minute.

  1. Where can you find a wedding planner that suits your budget and need?
  • A great place to start is a recommended vendor list from your venue.
  • Also, you can search Google for your respective area.
  • From there you can also look into Wedding Wire and the Knot

All good things have to come to an end and in this case, our meeting had to wrap up. There was so much more that I learned and that I want to share with you all but for now, I am narrowing it to the scope that it is. Do yourself a favor and hop over to Tara’s website and blog to read more about wedding planning, you won’t be disappointed. I hope to share more tips about wedding planning in the future so be sure to check back later on.
