Our First Mistake As New Homeowners

December 13, 2017

When you’ve never owned a home but have dreamed of it all of your life, it’s no surprise that you might be so eager in your search that you overlook some crucial things when purchasing your first home. I have no regrets but occasionally, I will think back to the very exciting time of the “home search” and wonder where we would be if we had really taken the time to consider all of our options.

Our First Mistake As New Homeowners

In our case, we decided to buy the house that was outside of our budget (who’s with me there?) and in total need of updating but with tons of character and room to grow. I am so in love with it still but I think we made a mistake in purchasing a home that needed more work than we realized.

Every square inch of it was out of level and covered in wallpaper. The main bathroom was unusable with a walk-in tub and antique sink with one nozzle for hot and one nozzle for cold that didn’t even remotely come close to each other. Your choice was to either burn your hands under the hot nozzle or freeze them under the cold one. Obviously, that was the first project we tackled but they never seemed to end after that.

Because it is was so exciting for us to find our very first home, I believe we neglected to truly weigh the options and carefully consider our choice before making the purchase. This house has been a ton of work and I don’t believe we fully understood that when we purchased it. Grant it, most homes are a ton of work and that is part of being a homeowner but the thing we like to reflect on and encourage other people who are about to purchase their first home is to take the time to really look through the house they want and see it as it truly is. Don’t be distracted by the excitement, rather look for the flaws in the home and ask yourself if you can handle them.

Like when I commented about having to navigate those steep stairs when you have babies. ;). You’ll be a pro at it though.
